A Brief History of Mother’s Day

mothers day

Anna Jarvis is credited with founding Mother’s Day in the United States.

Every year we celebrate Mother’s Day on the second Sunday of every month. It is one of the most popular American holidays, and is the third-largest card sending holiday in the United States. Hallmark also says that Mother’s Day is the second largest gift giving holiday of the year (behind Christmas) and Americans spend an average of $152 per person.

The origin of mothers day goes back to 1907 when Anna Jarvis started a campaign in West Virginia to establish a national mother’s day on the second anniversary of her mother’s death. The day was celebrated, and the next year the day was spread to Philadelphia. Ms. Jarvis and her supporters bagan to write to ministers, business people, and politicians all across the country, and by 1911, mother’s day was celebrated all across the country, and by 1914 it was declared a national holiday.

Let’s celebrate Mother’s Day this year by saying thanks to our moms. Happy Mother’s Day to all of the mom’s everywhere!
